Four Mountaineers Earn Academic Big 12 Honors

MORGANTOWN, W.Va - Four members of the West Virginia University women’s tennis team have been named to the Academic All-Big 12 Tennis team, as announced by the league on Tuesday.
Senior Kaja Mrgole (sport and exercise psychology), junior Habiba Shaker (psychology), and sophomore Paula Goetz (industrial engineering) were named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team, while junior Lyn Yuen Choo (pharmacy) earned Academic All-Big 12 Second Team honors.
The award marks the second consecutive year that Mrgole and Shaker have been named to the first team. Mrgole was also named to the second team in 2015. Choo earned her third recognition on Monday. She was named to the first team in 2015 and 2016.
It is also the first time since 2014 that four tennis student-athletes were named to the first team.
“It is great that Kaja (Mrgole), Habiba (Shaker), Paula (Goetz) and Lyn Yuen (Choo) were all individually recognized by the Big 12 for their academic excellence” Coach Miha Lisac said of the announcement. “This award speaks to their dedication towards academics, as well as the tennis program’s and the athletic department’s commitment to academic growth and success of the student-athletes.”
Student-athletes must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 and have participated in their team’s scheduled events to qualify. Student-athletes can also qualify if they have maintained a 3.0 GPA in the previous two semesters and fulfill the participation requirement.
