WVU Meets SEC Foes Saturday

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – For the first time this spring, the West Virginia University women’s soccer team takes to the road, as the Mountaineers travel to Knoxville, Tennessee, for a pair of matches against Tennessee and Alabama on Saturday, April 22, at Regal Soccer Stadium.
WVU kicks against the Volunteers at 11 a.m. EST and against the Crimson Tide at 2:30 p.m.
“We will face two touch challenges Saturday in Tennessee and Alabama,” Mountaineer coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said. “I’m looking forward to seeing how this team responds to adversity on the road.”
Results from Saturday’s matches will be posted on WVUsports.com on Monday, April 24.
The Mountaineers concluded their home spring slate with a 2-0-1 mark, most recently defeating Xavier, 4-0, on April 9, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. Sophomore forward Sh’Nia Gordon paced the team with four points on two goals, while junior forward Michaela Abam (1 G, 1 A) and sophomore forward Grace Cutler (1 G, 1 A) each tallied three points. WVU has outscored its opponents 10-2 this spring.
UT finished the 2016 season with an 11-9-1 record and went 5-5-1 in the Southeastern Conference. The squad dropped a 3-1 loss to No. 11 Auburn in the SEC Tournament in its season finale on Nov. 2.
Alabama went 9-8-2 in 2016 and 4-5-2 in SEC play. The Crimson Tide’s season ended with a 1-0 double-overtime defeat to Texas A&M in the SEC Tournament on Oct. 31.
