MORGANTOWN, W.VaThe West Virginia University rowing team will embark on its 2017 spring season at the Sixth Annual Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational on Saturday and Sunday at the Melton Lake Rowing Venue in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

The two-day event is hosted by Louisville. Twelve teams, including WVU, will compete at the Cardinal Invite. The Mountaineers will be joined by Big 12 foes Tennessee and Kansas. The field will also include, Clemson, Louisville, Miami, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Notre Dame, Tulsa and Virginia.

“We've had a productive training camp so far and we're looking forward to capping it off at the Cardinal Invite,” coach Jimmy King said. “This weekend's racing will provide an opportunity for us to test various line-ups against some top competitors to complete our week long assessment of progress that has been made and work that needs to be done.”

Saturday’s morning session is set to launch at 9:14 a.m. WVU’s first race on the 2000-meter course will be at 10:58 a.m., and a new boat will launch in eight minute intervals until 11:22 a.m. The afternoon session for the Mountaineers is slated to begin at 5:10, and five boats will launch in eight minute intervals until 5:42.

Sunday will feature one morning session marking the end of the competition. Racing is scheduled to begin at 9:14, with the first WVU boat launching at 11:06, and the last boat launching at 11:38. West Virginia will have a total of five boats racing in the competition.

The Mountaineers have not competed since closing the fall season against Duquesne in Morgantown on Nov. 11. WVU’s first varsity eight was able to claim victories in two of the four 1000-meter pieces, while the second varsity eights bested their opponents in all four races.

The Cardinal Invite will mark the first of three races in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, for WVU this spring. The Mountaineers will also compete at the Melton Lake Rowing Venue at the Big 12 Duals on April 8 and the Big 12 Championships on May 13 and 14.
