RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Junior right-hander Sean Carley
fired seven shutout innings Saturday to lead WVU to a 2-1 victory over UC Riverside at the Riverside Sports Complex.
Carley improved to 2-0 on the year after only allowing no runs on four hits, four walks and striking out three batters.
West Virginia (7-4) improved to 2-0 on the weekend and the day after defeating Sacramento State, 8-1, earlier in the afternoon.
UC Riverside starter Ben Doucette (0-2) was charged with the loss as he allowed one run on six hits with two walks and six strikeouts.
The Mountaineers collected their first run in the top of the third. Junior shortstop Taylor Munden
hit a double down the left field line and then scored as junior second baseman Billy Fleming
poked a two-out single into right field.
Freshman right fielder Shaun Wood
added an insurance run in the top of the ninth following an RBI ground out by junior center fielder Bobby Boyd
Junior left-handed reliever Ross Vance
entered the game in the eighth, retiring one batter and walking one before giving way to junior right-hander Pascal Paul
. Paul allowed a single to the first batter, but forced the next two into outs to get out of the jam.
Paul then closed out the game in the ninth inning to earn the save.
