Morgantown, W.Va.– The No.1-ranked West Virginia University rifle team will host No. 8 Nebraska Saturday, Jan. 19, at the WVU Rifle Range.

Tomorrow’s match is the first of the spring season for the Mountaineers (9-0, 4-0 GARC). The match is also the team’s first Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) match of the spring and the final home competition for senior Petra Zublasing.

The Mountaineers hold a 7-3 all-time record against NU (7-4, 2-1 GARC) and have won the last three matches.

In the last meeting between the two teams, the Mountaineers outshot the Cornhuskers in air rifle (2354-2325) and smallbore (2313-2285) at the NU Rifle Range, in Lincoln, Neb.

“Nebraska is definitely going to bring some good competition,” says coach Jon Hammond. “They have a new coach this year that was at Kentucky last year. I think Stacey (Underwood) has been developing the team really well. They are a young team, but it is still a conference match and they have been improving this year.”

WVU closed out its fall season with back-to-back wins in both guns at No. 4 Alaska-Fairbanks (4719-4670, 4716-4651), in November.

Zublasing led the team at UAF, shooting 597 air rifle and 588 smallbore on day one and 596 air rifle and 593 smallbore on day two. The Appiano, Italy, native’s second smallbore score matched the school record previously set by Nicco Campriani. Sophomore Meelis Kiisk shot a career-best air rifle score of 594 on day one, giving him second place. Sophomore Maren Prediger shot 594 air rifle on the second day for a second-place finish.

NU recently fell to No.7 Air Force, 4643-4858, on Jan. 12 at the NU Rifle Range.

“We are feeling pretty good about this match,” concludes Hammond. “We are obviously keen to get back in the range and get on with competitions. The team has had a good break and has been back for a little while now, so I think overall we are ready to get this season underway.”

Saturday’s match is expected to go into the afternoon. Live scores will be available HERE.
