MORGANTOWN, W.Va.- The West Virginia University football team addressed members of the media Tuesday night. The Mountaineers play host to Oklahoma on Saturday, Nov. 17. The game will be nationally televised on Fox.
On what he’s seen in Oklahoma’s run defense
I’ve seen that the safeties come down, and pretty much play the box, and you have to make them miss. Like every other team we’ve seen, they rely on their safeties to come up and make a lot of plays in the run game.
On staying healthy with his increased workload at running back
I feel good, I feel fine. That was a big thing for me during the offseason, getting my body to the point, where I could last for a whole season. I feel like I’m holding up pretty well right now. I do more stretching and get into the cold tub more often this year to keep taking care and treating my body.
On the morale of the team
The guys that are here are guys that want to be here. We just need to keep pushing and keep going forward. We’re not quitters. We just want to keep working hard and hope for the best.
On the quarterback matchup between him and Oklahoma quarterback Landry Jones
I’ve followed his career, and Landry is a guy who has done a great job since he took over for (Sam Bradford). He could’ve entered the draft and have been one of the higher picks, but he chose to stay with his teammates, and I respect him for that. He’s a great quarterback; he’s done some really good things for his team last season and this season. I just look forward to another opportunity to go out there and compete, and show improvement myself.
On the challenge of facing man coverage defense this week rather than zone coverage most of the season
It’s a good opportunity for our wide outs to have some one-on-one matchups, and it’s up to me to put the ball in the right spot. It’s a good opportunity for us, and I’m looking forward to it.
On how his ankle injury a few weeks ago affected his play
It affects you a lot. Me specifically, because I’m a wide receiver, my job is to run around the field. I have to run down the field, and just about everything I need to do involves needing my ankle to be at full strength, so I can be at 100 percent.
On his offensive performance last week following the past few games
The whole difference was my ankle for the most part. It felt pretty good last weekend, and I was just able to come out and make big plays. I wanted to get back to my old ways, being the playmaker that I am and doing all I can do to help the offense progress. Last week, my ankle was a lot better and it showed on the field.
On the final three games of the season
We definitely need to win out for sure. It’s a big test coming in. But I think if we work hard, play hard, and just fly around out there on all three sides of the ball we can be pretty hard to beat.
On building on the progress the defense has made this season
I think we finally understood that we can actually do it. We can stop other teams. You just have to be consistent. You have a game against TCU, then this past Saturday we didn’t play too hot. We just have to be more consistent.
On the challenge of playing Oklahoma this weekend
I grew up watching Oklahoma all the time. They’re a great team, and it could really turn our season around if we get a win against a top team in Morgantown and boost the morale of the team. Not many people on this team have gone through a four-game losing streak. Just getting a win, especially against a great team, will help our confidence a lot and propel us to win these last games of the season.
On the progress made by the defense
We just wanted to go back to the basics. Just having fun and playing hard. Instead of looking at it as if we do something wrong, this will happen mentality. I think we really got back to the basics, and saw improvement because of it.
