MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University cross country team opened its 2012 season Friday evening with a 4k race at the WVU Agronomy Farm in the inaugural WVU Alumni Open.

“I’m pleased. This was a good rust buster tonight. It was the first time we’ve been on grass all year, so that makes a huge difference because this is a very difficult course,” coach Sean Cleary said. “To see some of the youngsters run the way they did is a real bright spot for the future of the program.”

Ten Mountaineer runners raced as pairs, in addition to six WVU alum racers. Redshirt-junior Jordan Hamric and freshman Sydney Scott were the duo to cross the finish line first. Hamric finished in 15:23, while Scott ran the fastest of all runners with a time of 15:09. The pair combined for a first-place finish of 30:32.

“Sydney comes in off of a very successful high school cross country campaign. She is right about where I thought she would be coming in and looks to be an integral part of our future,” Cleary explained.

Redshirt-senior Aubrey Moskal and freshman Megan Yuan came in second place with a team time of 31:13. Moskal rank a 4k time of 15:25, while Yuan crossed the line in 15:48. The third place team was Morgantown native Hallie Portner and freshman Paige Szabat with a time of 15:51.

“Jordan and Aubrey did a good job. They came in and led the way,” Cleary said. “The first pack got out really hard and settled into their pace. It was interesting to see four girls come across the line very close to each other. It may be a different chemistry if we ran them in a race all against each other, but a pretty good indication of how things are going. This is actually the fastest that they’ve run this since track season.”

Redshirt-freshman Sarah McCauley and redshirt-sophomore Allison Pettit combined for a fourth-place time of 31:51. The duo of sophomore Kelly Williams and redshirt-junior Chelsea Jarvis finished in fifth place with a time of 33:13.

The alum to race included Karly Hamric, Katelyn Williams, Mandy McBean, Stephanie Caruso, Ahna Lewis and Heather Cleary. McBean and Caruso were a pair, and Cleary and Lewis were a pair, but each pair finished with a time of 37:20 in a tie for sixth place. Hamric and Williams took eighth place with a time of 41:29.

“Like any time you have a first time event I fully expect to see this event grow and grow over the next few years,” Cleary said. “We did it because we needed to have a competition this weekend, but with the reception and the crowd here today, I think it is something we will continue. I see this thing growing into a very big event in the future.”

The Mountaineers will next compete at the PSU Spiked Shoe, at 10:30 a.m., on September 8.
