MADRID – Forward Frances Silva recorded a hat trick to lead the West Virginia women’s soccer team past FC Torrejon, 3-0, at Camp De Futbol Municipal in Madrid, Spain.

“It was a good effort tonight for not knowing how our legs would respond after traveling just two days ago,” said coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “We did a good job of implementing what we’ve been working on in practice. And Frances was pretty special out there in finding the back of the net.”

Teammate Kate Schwindel assisted on two of the three goals, the first coming on a through ball up the middle. Silva took two touches and buried the ball into the lower left corner for a 1-0 lead.

West Virginia added to its lead as Silva beat the FC Torrejon goalkeeper on a pair of 1-versus-1 scoring tries to make it a 3-0 contest.

In the 55th minute, Schwindel nearly increased the team’s lead as she dribbled past a defender and was intentionally grabbed from behind just past the center circle. A yellow card was issued as the opponent eliminated a breakaway opportunity.

Goalkeepers Sara Keane and Katie Osterman combined for the shutout with Osterman making a big save in the final 10 minutes to keep FC Torrejon off the scoreboard. Center back Mallory Smith led the defense that allowed only three shots on-goal.

The Mountaineers return to action tomorrow night with their second friendly match against Rayo Vallecano, the reigning Spanish Women’s Champions.
