Football: BIG EAST Weekly Awards Announced

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. (October 18, 2010) – Cornerback Keith Tandy and quarterback Geno Smith have been named BIG EAST Conference football weekly award winners for their performances against USF on Thursday night.

Tandy was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week after making a team-high 10 tackles to go with one tackle for loss, a forced fumble and an interception to lead West Virginia to a 20-6 win against USF. Tandy’s interception was his fourth in the last three games, helping the Mountaineers limit the Bulls to 209 yards of offense and no touchdowns. He currently ranks first in the BIG EAST for passes defended with four interceptions and two pass breakups, and first in the BIG EAST for interceptions.

Smith was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll after completing 24 of 31 passes for 219 yards and two touchdowns in a 20-6 win against USF. He is now 5-1 as the Mountaineer starter. After six games, Smith ranks second in the BIG EAST Conference in passing efficiency (156.7), second in yards per game (226.3 avg.) and third in total offense (232.2 yards/game).

West Virginia continues play at home this Saturday, facing 4-2 Syracuse in a noon homecoming game that will be televised nationally on ESPN2.
