MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SOCCER

Success by West Virginia University’s men’s and women’s soccer programs in 2007 has warranted three total soccer matches - two women’s and one men’s - to be televised statewide on West Virginia Public Broadcasting (PBS), this year.

"We are excited to build on our partnership between MSN and West Virginia Public Broadcasting," Mike Parsons, WVU’s deputy director of athletics, said. "Interest in our nationally ranked soccer programs has grown and it will be an opportunity for Mountaineer fans throughout the state to see these great teams in action against outstanding competition."

The first PBS broadcast is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 6, at 1:30 p.m., when the women’s soccer team takes on Boston University at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown. The Mountaineer men will battle Buffalo on WVPBS later that afternoon.

"We have, what I think, is one of the more competitive schedules in America," WVU men’s soccer Head Coach Marlon LeBlanc said. "We compete in one of the top soccer conferences in the country. Being on statewide television is a wonderful opportunity to highlight how our program has developed over the years."

"We are very excited that West Virginia PBS will be broadcasting some of our games this fall," WVU women’s Head Coach Nikki Izzo-Brown, said. "This is a great opportunity for a lot of fans that normally would not get a chance to see us play, to watch us on television. These games will also allow soccer fans to watch BIG EAST soccer, one of the best conferences in the country."

    WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

In 2007, The Mountaineer Sports Network teamed up with West Virginia Public Broadcasting to exclusively televise nine West Virginia University women’s basketball games statewide. Once again this year an appealing menu of games will air on West Virginia PBS.

The partnership between MSN and West Virginia PBS began on Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2007, at the Charleston Civic Center when the Mountaineer women’s basketball team played host to the defending national champion and Tennessee Lady Volunteers. Other games on the schedule included a road game at Connecticut on Jan. 9, and the Chesapeake Capital Classic against Marshall on Jan. 23.

“This is an exciting opportunity,” says West Virginia Public Broadcasting executive director Dennis Adkins. “We have always carried the women’s Capital Classic on West Virginia PBS and carrying these additional women’s games is a great next step. It’s a chance to showcase our state’s top female athletes through a statewide venue.”

“Coach Carey and his staff have worked extremely hard to bring our women’s program to national prominence,” WVU athletic director Ed Pastilong says. “We have a great team, and this is a nice bonus for our fans throughout the state to be able to watch our women’s team regularly on television.”

West Virginia Public Broadcasting nurtures personal growth, promotes civic responsibility and inspires lifelong discovery through high-quality programming and services. West Virginia Public Radio, WV PBS, wvpubcast.org and Ready to Learn are all services of West Virginia Public Broadcasting.
