MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s soccer team participated in its favorite community service activity two weeks ago, as the Mountaineers held their annual 4-versus-4 tournament, “Three’s a Team…the Fourth’s a Mountaineer” event on Feb. 26, at the Caperton Indoor Practice Facility.
Open to boys and girls in grades 3-8, as well as college-age students and adults, each team of three players was paired with a WVU women’s soccer student-athlete or Mountaineer coach. Following a day filled with soccer from dawn to dusk, the Mountaineers walked away with more than $8,000 in donations for Morgantown’s Betty Puskar Breast Care Center.
“The WVU women’s soccer team enjoyed a fun day of giving back to our local Morgantown community and to a great cause,” assistant coach Marisa Kanela, the team’s community service liaison, said. “Approximately 90 teams came out that day to show their support for a cause bigger than our sport. Hopefully, this day influenced the players and families who participated and helped raise awareness and fight for this very special cause. Our WVU women’s soccer players understand the importance of giving back, and this tournament is a great way to do just that.
“I am grateful to be a part of this tradition that (coach) Nikki (Izzo-Brown) started more than 10 years ago, and I know our players are, too. We all look forward to this event each year, and I couldn’t be happier for what our players each day – they are great role models for our local youth.”
The WVU women’s soccer program has raised more than $120,000 for the Betty Puskar Breast Care Center over the last decade.
